Anti-virus

 

AVG - Antivirus Free Edition. The best free Antivirus. Not as powerful or efficient as the market leaders but for free, it's a fine bit of software.

 

Malware Removal

 

Ad-aware Free - Easy to use malware scanner. Powerful but yet simple tool for novice users.

MalwareBytes - Ideal tool to remove persistant items left by Ad-aware. Not very good at finding everything but good at finding less common infections.

Spybot - Powerful tool but not that easy to use / easy to do more damage than good. Recommended for items that the above items can't solve and for competent users only!

HighjackThis - Extremley powerful tool at finding rogue applications. This is definatley only for Advanced users.

Windows Defender - Installed as standard on Vista but XP users can also install it. Very descrete program but not as powerful as standalone products.
